The average age of vehicles on the road today in 2022 has grown to 12.2 years with many older than 20 years now. Most vehicles manufactured after 1999 have some type of passive anti-theft immobilization feature. About 90 percent of vehicles made since then have what’s known as a transponder key. Over time because keys are made out a soft metal (brass) with each time a key is inserted and withdrawn from the door or ignition lock you lose a few microns because of the key physically contacting the spring-loaded tumblers. This process of erosion happens very slowly. Eventually the lock begins to “stick”, “hang up”, or “no longer work as designed”. And then the lock doesn’t work at all.
Most people, mechanics, and dealers throw their hands up and decide to put a new lock in. More often than not this is a costly and an unnecessary replacement of a perfectly fine lock. The key is what needs to be replaced, but not a copy of this already worn-out key, but rather an original key needs to be made. We’ve seen this issue happen to a 10-year old Corolla and other vehicles including many GM, Ford, and Honda models to name a few of the most common.
TOYOTA – A common problem with all Toyota locks from 1992-2007 is they contain two unique tumblers in their locks that cause them to jam and only turn partially. This may be due to the key being worn or the tumbler itself being worn. Either way, Affordable Locksmiths can repair this unique problem and save you hundreds of dollars and your lock will not need to be replaced. If you were to take this to a mechanic, you would have your lock replaced and be left with separate keys and no longer have a one key solution to your vehicle security.
2003+HONDA/ACURA – These door locks and ignitions were Honda’s first offering in high security after a slew of thefts gained national attention in earlier models. However, with age, at one point or another these new locks jam up, often leaving the owner stranded since the lock provides very little warning of imminent failure.
