The Wonderful World of Keyless Entry

Medford Locksmith

Door locks have truly evolved over the last several years. You can now buy locks that are not only keyless but even use your cell phone to unlock them. Misplacing or losing your keys are no longer big concerns with these options and can be very convenient for families as well. From designer keypads to Bluetooth systems the consumer has many options and price points to choose from. So why choose keyless entry?

Bluetooth Lock

First and foremost, you don’t need to carry house keys, although all entry systems still have the option to use a key. You will also never have to worry that when you give someone a copy of your key that it might fall into the wrong hands. Another big advantage to keypad locks is that they are immune to being picked and can’t be subverted by lock bumping (read about bumping here). Putting in a code is also easier than turning a key for many people. You can also create temporary codes for visitors and that code can be easily deleted when no longer needed.

Affordable Locksmiths always recommends Schlage and Yale locks, and at the least, established lock brands. Yale and Schlage have the least problems and last the longest. You also should be careful ordering online from companies you aren’t familiar with. The Bluetooth lock made by a company called Level (and was sold at the Apple store) featured in a video on our Residential page not only cost $329 but was pickable in 5 minutes. Sadly, the companies’ defense was that people don’t usually break into homes through the front door anyway! So, stay with the companies you know, and make sure you have a licensed locksmith install it.

When thinking about keyless entry, consider the following advantages:

Keypad Deadbolt
  • Keyless deadbolts perform the same function as standard deadbolts and come in all lock grades
  • Keyless locks can be useful for people with certain kinds of motor issues that make using keys difficult
  • Losing your key isn’t an emergency call to a locksmith but will still require a call if you want to replace the key
  • You can program temporary codes for visitors or pet sitters and delete them when they leave
  • Keyless locks also use keys in the event of a malfunction
  • Bluetooth locks allow you to open your home from a remote location for service people and guests
  • Many Bluetooth locks also have voice control with Alexa and other home systems
  • Keypad locks will not engage if the battery is low so you will know when to change the battery (but you can still use your key)

But also consider these disadvantages:

  • If you have trouble remembering codes, a keypad system may not be for you. It is also recommended that you change your code from time to time as buttons can get worn or discolored, making it easier for a thief to try and figure out the code
  • Bluetooth locks require a cellphone while the others do not
  • There can be issues in communicating with the smartphone app on Bluetooth systems
  • A power failure can cause some issues with wireless systems, however they are not a problem with keypads and fingerprint readers that have their own battery source.
  • The cost can be prohibitive although price points for keypads have come down dramatically in the last few years.

Whether you choose a keypad or a Bluetooth lock, the choice is up to you. They come in many style options as well as quality (be sure to watch this before you order online). Talk to Affordable Locksmiths in Medford to help you decide which one will work best for you. Call 541-772-5397 today.
