Why Choose a Locksmith Over The Dealer for Key Fob Replacement?

Almost all new vehicles these days combine their security with their ignitions, using either smart keys or fobs. Fobs make it easy to get into your vehicle without having to fish around for keys. But what do you do if you lose your key fob or it stops working? There are several options but calling a locksmith has many benefits that will save you both time and money.

What is a key fob?

Fobs are small electronic devices that transmit a specific code to a receiver inside your vehicle allowing it to unlock and start your vehicle. They can also release the trunk, roll down the windows, remotely start the car, or include a panic button when you need help.

What are your options if you need to repair or replace a fob?

  • Many people still believe their only option is to call the dealership when they lose their key fob or it stops working. What they don’t know is this can not only prove to be costly, but it can be time consuming as well. You need to make an appointment and then pay a significant amount more than calling a locksmith for the exact same fob. A Mercedes fob at the dealership will run you $800.
  • Another option is to purchase a new fob on the internet. This may seem like a way to save money but it might end up costing you more. Not only do you still have to have it programmed but you are rolling the dice that it won’t be defective. You will still be charged for someone’s time to find out it doesn’t work. There are also different levels of quality in fobs found on the web and the cheap ones should be avoided (they just don’t last). If you do choose to go this route, make sure it is guaranteed, returnable, and ships from the United States.
  • Your third, and best option, is to call a professional locksmith. Locksmiths have the training and expertise to diagnose and solve fob related issues, whether it be programming a new fob, repairing your existing one, or replacing a damaged or lost key fob. Better yet, a mobile locksmith will come to you, charge much less than the dealer, and deliver the exact same quality as the dealer.

Should you try to fix it yourself?

When a fob stops working you should always consider the battery first. These are small flat batteries that you can purchase locally, typically a CR2032. You will know for sure when you open it up. The steps to opening the fob vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Fobs typically hold a hidden key which needs to be removed in order to open the back. Either slide the key out or pull it away from the fob. A fob with a sliding key may have a small button that releases it. For a fob with a springing key, press the spring button on the fob to pull it up or pull the key forward to get it out of the way.

The next step also varies. Some fobs have screws holding on the back and others seem airtight and very difficult to open (and sometimes are). We recommend looking for a video on YouTube for your specific fob to make sure you don’t damage it when you open it.

In some cases after replacing the battery the remote will need to be reprogrammed. To see if this is something you can do yourself check your car owner’s manual. Programming a fob with no tools is called on-board programming and it’s different for each car. Additionally, on-board programming may only allow your fob to unlock the car, not start it, and might require special tools. If your fob requires a tool to program it, you will need to contact a professional locksmith.

Inside a key fob

For more than a battery replacement you should not attempt to fix a broken fob unless all it needs is to be duct taped together. The inside has a small circuit board and you could damage a fob that could have been repaired, resulting in having to purchase a new one.
