Fobs typically hold a hidden key which needs to be removed in order to open the back. Either slide the key out or pull it away from the fob. A fob with a sliding key may have a small button that releases it. For a fob with a springing key, press the spring button on the fob to pull it up or pull the key forward to get it out of the way.

In some cases after replacing the battery the remote will need to be reprogrammed. To see if this is something you can do yourself check your car owner’s manual. Programming a fob with no tools is called on-board programming and it’s different for each car. Additionally, on-board programming may only allow your fob to unlock the car, not start it, and might require special tools. If your fob requires a tool to program it, you will need to contact a professional locksmith.
For more than a battery replacement you should not attempt to fix a broken fob unless all it needs is to be duct taped together. The inside has a small circuit board and you could damage a fob that could have been repaired, resulting in having to purchase a new one.
